print versionProject "Protection of white-tailed sea eagles in Lithuania"

Project "Protection of white-tailed sea eagles in Lithuania" objective is to preserve and increase the population of internationally protected white-tailed sea eagle (Haliaeetus albicilla) in Lithuania. The activities performed under the White-tailed Sea Eagle Protection Project include the practical research work mainly aimed at identifying the natural white-tailed sea eagle breeding locations, performing their monitoring, finding places suitable for erecting the artificial nests and raising such nests. For the purpose of preserving the population of white-tailed eagle, the State is establishing special protection areas, however, this alone is not enough. It is vital that there should be found as many white-tailed sea eagle natural nests as possible and that these should be put under supervision. To this end, the Forest Inventory and Management Institute, the administrations of the protected areas and other relevant institutions must be provided with the geographic coordinates of the identified nests.

The erection of artificial nests represents an effective measure of protecting this particular species of birds. Based on the findings of research studies, many birds of prey found in forests are able to breed in artificial nests. The white-tailed sea eagle, too, settles in artificial nests quite willingly. One of the first cases in Lithuania of a white-tailed sea eagle breeding in the artificial nest was recorded in 1987 in Čepkelių Reservation.

To erect an artificial nest, first you must find a suitable place and tree, assemble on the ground a platform from wood balks to be impregnated by an antiseptic substance and then fix thus constructed platform on the tree at 15-25 m height. Further, load this platform with tree branches and then, using thinner branches and other greenery, arrange the top of the nest. Having done this, secure the whole construction with wire. Hence produced artificial nest is of about 1,5 m width and 0,5 m height. If the nest is erected properly, it may stay in place for a period of 10 years and even longer.

The artificially constructed nests help to make up for the lack of natural nests due to the intensive intervention of human activities into the forests. A nest intended for white-tailed sea eagles may be raised in a tree that is supposed to stay uncut for a long time. This is the way to preserve a nesting place which will be used by the conservative eagles for several years, decade or even longer. To ensure successful breeding of bird, erect in the vicinity of natural nest a couple of artificial ones so that if the natural nest collapses the bird could have the choice to move to the one already existing. In this case, the impact of disturbances is reduced since the birds are able to change the nests thus avoiding the arising risks. These artificial nests may also help to attract the birds to the territories where they never before have been found breeding.

In 2003-2008, the following was done in Klaipeda, Kaunas, Vilnius, Panevezys, Utena, Telsiai, Siauliai and Taurage counties: found 137 natural nests, identified 66 successfully breeding pairs of White-tailed sea eagle, constructed and raised 114 artificial nests and provided additional hibernal feeding to 10 sites.

Protection of white-tailed sea eagle in Telsiai, Siauliai and Taurage counties (Stage V)

In 2008 the Foundation successfully closed the project “Protection of White-tailed sea eagles” in Telsiai, Siauliai and Taurage counties (Stage V). Increase of community involvement in preserving rare species“.

In 2007, the Foundation commenced true the financing of United Nations Development Programme Global Environment Facility’s Small grants programme and Ministry of Environment of the Republic of Lithuania. Performing the works, there was evaluated the population of breeding White-tailed eagles in Telsiai, Siauliai and Taurage, found 22 natural nests and 12 pairs living in the territory. Thanks to the research the population of White-tailed eagles increased by 13 %. In the project area there were erected 20 artificial nests. Seeking to protect the nests area, the map references of natural and artificial nests have been forwarded to Forest Inventory and Management Institute. All nests (both natural and artificial) put under supervision, determined the rate of breeding and carried out the ringing of brood.

In 2008, 251 nest areas (natural and artificial) in 8 counties were under supervision. Within the period from 2003 to 2008, there were found 32 natural and 12 artificial destroyed nests. The research has confirmed the existence of 105 natural and 102 artificial nests.
